Many experts, dieticians and nutritionists dispute that certain foods have all the health advantages claimed by their proponents, citing studies that invalidate the benefits of certain foods. For example, recent studies have concluded that the popular rubuntu superfood product alfalfa is nothing more than a fancy name for sugar beets. Sugar beets were long considered a much stronger superfood and therefore deserving of the name, but they have been proven to have no nutritional value.
Superfoods are supposed to prevent or heal disease, cure cancer, slow aging, prevent heart disease, improve fertility, or improve symptoms of depression or arthritis. Again, this sounds like a pretty good list. Unfortunately, it’s almost too good to be true. There is not one food that can cure or prevent every single disease or illness! Not even all of the foods on the superfood list! While there may be a few exceptions, you can’t take the claims that some nutritional guides make at face value.
Superfoods are thought to contain “life giving” antioxidants and “immune-boosting” phytochemicals. Antioxidants serve to fight free radicals, which are molecules that can cause damage to your body. Free radicals are one of the major causes of cellular aging. What’s more, phytochemicals are powerful natural competitors of harmful HAPs (high acute antioxidant activity) in the digestive system. Phytochemicals, including turmeric, cayenne, ginger, green tea, garlic, and black pepper, work to protect your cells from damage by these same free radicals. This protection allows your body to naturally attack them and flush them out.
Some of the most common antioxidants include: Vitamin C, Beta Carotene, Lutein, Lycopene, Zeaxanthin, and Resveratrol. If you take a comprehensive multivitamin containing those vitamins and nutrients, you are already taking steps toward improving your immune system and boosting your cell growth and repair. If you don’t take a multivitamin, you should consider adding an antioxidant supplement. Most of these are available in health food stores and online. Some of the highest antioxidant levels are found in green tea, red wine, and grape skin.
Many of the so-called superfoods are actually not true superfoods at all. For example, while red wine may have some health benefits, drinking it on a regular basis is not recommended for anyone with high blood pressure or other heart concerns. It has only recently been discovered that red wine contains resveratrol, which is supposed to be a potent anti-oxidant and help combat aging and disease. However, a group of French scientists recently published a study indicating that the amount of resveratrol found in red wine was only slightly higher than the average amount found in drinking red wine. The study concluded that the benefits of resveratrol were primarily due to the alcohol in the beverage.
Another myth includes claims that ginger can reduce inflammation. While ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, it is very beneficial for sufferers of digestive problems and heartburn. In fact, ginger has been used for hundreds of years as a remedy for heartburn, indigestion, and digestive problems, and has even been prescribed by physicians in China for years. The only thing that has been noted is that there is currently no research that indicates that ginger will in fact reduce cholesterol levels or blood sugar in people.
